The Town of Cuba Ambulance Service is welcoming 2026 with a major equipment upgrade aimed at improving patient care and protecting first responders. Thanks to generous community support, Cuba Ambulance has purchased two new powered stretchers – often referred to as Stryker Power Cots – for use in its ambulances.

These stretchers feature a battery-powered hydraulic system that allows EMTs and medics to raise, lower, and load patients with the push of a button, significantly reducing physical strain and the risk of injury for EMS personnel. The purchase was made possible through donations from local organizations, businesses, and individual community members.

The effort began with a local Chair Aerobics exercise class taught by EMS provider Linda Botens. During class sessions focused on proper lifting techniques – designed to protect the neck, shoulders, back, knees, and ankles – participants used real-world examples such as lifting cots or other objects from the floor. Exercises known as the “Monkey Challenge” and “Squeeze the Charmin” sparked conversations about the daily physical demands faced by EMTs.

As awareness grew, the Chair Aerobics class launched a fundraising campaign to support the Cuba Ambulance Service. Community members responded generously, with donations helping make the powered stretchers a reality. One community member, Peggy Bulson, played a key role in the effort by leading the campaign and making a substantial contribution to fund the project.

The timing of the new equipment could not be better. Since 2020, the number of calls handled by the Cuba Ambulance Service has doubled, and summertime standby calls have increased at the same rate. The new powered stretchers will help reduce physical stress on EMS providers while allowing crews to work more efficiently and safely.

The Town of Cuba Ambulance Service extends its sincere thanks to the Cuba community for its generosity and continued support. These donations represent a meaningful investment in both emergency responders and the residents they serve.
